'New Moon' Logo Contest

For the month of October, the Kanawha County Public Library system is sponsoring an art contest in honor of the upcoming "New Moon" movie. Using any medium you'd like, create a logo for the film, and then submit it to your local library. (Note: the winning entry could be modified to meet the library's graphic standards.) Winning entries will be published on the library's Web site, www.kanawhalibrary.org, and in FlipSide magazine (with artist's permission).

Mall Twilight History

     During July, Charleston Town Center presented a 3-week reading celebration co-sponsored by BrickStreet Insurance. There can be no better enrichment in the life of a young person than the magical adventure brought about by reading a story. Joined by media co-sponsors The Charleston Gazette and Electric 102.7 radio, BrickStreet and the mall presented a Children’s Story Time for young children to nearly 100 attendees.

     To further illustrate the importance of reading to young adults, we honored the current pop culture phenomenon and hit book series, Twilight, with an exciting Twilight Salute which featured hit Twilight movie star appearances and autograph sessions with both Peter Facinelli, who stars as Dr. Carlisle Cullen, and Michael Welch, who portrays Bella’s “good buddy” Mike Newton. Thousands of Twilight fans from 8 states came out to meet-and-greet these handsome Twilight stars!

     Center Court was transformed into The Twilight Lounge throughout the 3-week promotion and featured Twilight star posters, pop star celebrity magazines, Twilight books, art work, games, puzzles and word challenges. FlipSide, the source of all things teen, was featured in The Twilight Lounge and participated through writer recruitment and sponsorship of Twilight writing and art contests. Electric 102.7’s T. J. King, broadcast live from The Twilight Lounge and brought “Twilighters” out to the mall for great giveaways of Twilight merchandise, provided by Twilight mall retailers, Hot Topic, fye, Borders Express and FREE movie passes to the Twilight sequel, New Moon, opening November 20 at Park Place Stadium Cinemas!

Children's Story Time
Friday, July 10
1:00 - 3:00 p.m.



Over 50 children and their parents joined us on Friday, July 10, for a FREE Children's Story Time, designed to encourage childhood reading. They enjoyed story reading, a coloring station, balloons, bookmark crafts and a FREE book giveaway!

Electric 102.7 DJ's, staff from The Charleston Gazette and BrickStreet employees joined in for a great afternoon of reading fun!

On Saturday, July 11, we honored the current pop culture phenomenon and hit book series, Twilight, with a special autograph session by popular actor, Peter Facinelli, who stars as Dr. Carlisle Cullen in the smash hit movie, Twilight. (He also portrays Dr. Fitch Cooper “Coop” on Showtime’s hit “Nurse Jackie”.)

This special appearance by "Dr. Cullen" was extremely well attended by fans and parents alike! Over 1,000 fans filled the autograph and photo lines, some arriving as early as 5 a.m., and another thousand fans were gathered around Center Court by noon. Twilight fans arrived from Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Maryland and, of course, West Virginia! Every Charleston-based TV station and Charleston Newspapers were also in attendance covering this exciting event!

Our gracious Twilight star spoke briefly before greeting fans, emphasizing the importance of reading books for enjoyment. Peter stayed all afternoon and met with his fans for nearly 6 hours!






Many fans stayed near Center Court watching and talking with Peter until the last photo was delivered and autographed around 5:45 p.m.

Our guest star remarked how surprised he was by such an impressive turn out and he certainly expressed his appreciation to the fans. No one was turned away. Even those fans (and their parents) who spent the entire day waiting in long lines to meet Peter Facinelli remarked that at the end of the day it was well worth it!




REMINDER: We still have several photos remaining for those guests who opted to pick them up in the Mall Management Office.


The Twilight Lounge

 
    Located in Center Court, The Twilight Lounge was open through July 25, featuring fav Twilight character photos, books, contests, games and more! Fans also registered for a chance to win Twilight prizes! A Volvo display was presented courtesy of Smith Company Motor Cars.

Fans helped with our "Recycle a Book" Drive. Our goal to collect 100 story books for the Salvation Army's Boys and Girls Club of the Kanawha Valley was exceeded when fans donated 373 gently used books!

Fans enjoyed refreshments, contests and activities, including a Twilight movie cast member Look-A-Like Contest and Trivia Contest, hosted by Electric 102.7. Winners received VIP status on July 25 to be first in line to meet Michael Welch, the popular Twilight actor.

We continued to honor the pop culture phenomenon and hit book series, Twilight, with a special Fan Fest highlighted by popular actor, Michael Welch, who stars as Bella's "good buddy", Mike Newton, in the smash hit movie, Twilight (he has also appeared in 34 different TV series, including CSI, Law and Order: SVU, Joan of Arcadia and 7th Heaven).

The first 300 fans in line for this FREE Meet & Greet received a FREE photo of the star which he autographed.






To celebrate the conclusion of CTC's successful summer "Twilight" promotion, the mall marketing team and 2 guests took to the tree tops like Edward and Bella for a Canopy Tour along the New River Gorge, provided by Class VI.
